You can start and run a business on a shoestring. (As long as you're not a fussy mussy.)
I started my business a little over five years ago. Okay, I started my first successful business five years ago. With the computer i already owned and the printer that came for free with the computer. I'm still using both -- i did add a laptop a couple of years ago and upgraded to a nice reliable fax machine that i purchased at a fundraiser. I see businesses come and go and one of the main things those folks did wrong that luckily i did not is they got the "we need" bug. You know - "we need to upgrade all this equipment" or "we need a posh office" or "we need to take more time off". Yeah, that stuff will kill you!
Another thing to think about is your "need to know". Do you need to take a 6-month class on Adobe Flash so your website will be all snazzy? Probably not. I use FrontPage and have for years. I find beautiful pre-made templates at
www.pixelmill.net that are compatible with FrontPage. Do all the hot website people love it? no. Am I able to get my websites updated quickly and with very little hassle? yes. Do you need to know how to use
Quickbooks Pro? Oh yeah -- if this is your accounting system then you betcha! The reporting features will tell you a lot about your business -- important stuff that you do "need to know". What about other applications. Do you really need Office Pro? Maybe. I do have Office Pro -- I've used it for years and am comfortable with it. If you get it
learn how to use it. However, if you have never used Office Pro then you might be totally fine with MS Works which probably came on your computer for free. So
learn MS Works.
Spend a little time learning the software programs that deal with revenue and projections. This will allow you to spend the bulk of your time doing what makes you money - - - and hire someone you know for hourly temp work.
good luck!
